Why Time-Traveling Tachyons Probably Don't Exist

featured image

Tachyons are hypothetical particles that always travel faster than the speed of light. Einstein showed that such particles would allow communication over time, which opens up all sorts of problems with a fundamental rule of the universe. Although physicists haven’t proven that tachyons can’t exist, there’s good reason to believe that’s not the case.

The barrier that nothing with mass can cross at speed of light is not just an expression of the limits of engineering or a representation of a failure of the imagination. It’s rooted in the very laws of the universe, as expressed Einstein’s special theory of relativity.
