Thousands of fans gathered in Santos, Brazil to pay their respects to late football legend Pele.
Pele’s public vigil took place Monday at the Urbano Caldeira stadium. The soccer star died on Thursday after undergoing treatment for colon cancer As of September 2021, he is 82 years old.
The coffin of the three-time World Cup winner was placed on the pitch where he scored some of his best goals and mourners walked past his coffin.

The stadium was decorated with Brazilian flags and the No. 10 shirt, the number Pelé wore on his shirt for Santos and Brazil. Meanwhile, the stands were filled with bouquets of flowers from the mourners and “Eu sou Pelé” (“I am Pelé”), a song recorded by the star played on a loop through the loudspeakers, the Associated press reports.

Fans arrived early to pay their respects and flooded the streets wearing the No. 10 jerseys, yellow and green attire.

Among them was FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who told reporters that every country should have a stadium named after the footballing legend.
“I’m here with a lot of emotion, sadness, but also with a smile because he gave us so many smiles,” Infantino said, according to the AP. As FIFA, we will pay tribute to the “King” and we ask the whole world to observe a minute of silence.

The funeral will begin at the stadium on Tuesday morning. His coffin will then be brought to the streets of Santos and he will be buried in the Memorial Necropole Ecumênica cemetery.
Pelé’s son, Edson Nascimento, posted a series of instagram stories on the trip to Santos.
“Bringing our king home,” read one along with a video of him driving down the highway. Another showed his hand above the coffin with the caption: ‘We are home’.

Pelé’s daughter, Kely Nascimento, paid tribute to her father on social media on Thursday.
“All we are is thanks to you,” she wrote in a instagram Publish. “We love you so much. Rest in peace.”

Following the announcement of Pelé’s death, Tributes started pouring in on social media other players, commentators and world leaders.
Pelé won the World Cup title alongside Brazil in 1958, 1962 and 1970 and is widely regarded as one of the greatest football players to ever grace the sport.
He retired from football on October 1. 1, 1977, nearly two years after joining the New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League. His last exhibition, in front of a record 77,000 football fans in New Jersey, was particularly special because it was between the Cosmos and the Santos.
To honor his long career, Pelé played half the match with each club.
