Sam Howell Presser: I've worked my whole life to get to where I am right now; I'll try to win a Washington Commanders game starting QB

Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera named rookie Sam Howell the starting QB after practice today. There was a report this morning that veteran Taylor Heinicke would start, with Howell getting playing time in relief. This was immediately criticized, and Rivera said he spoke to several people before making the decision to start the 5th round rookie and let him get his first regular season shots in the NFL.

Howell is thrilled to have the opportunity to start and play his first real game in the league. He learned a lot from being the Channel 3 QB at the start of the season and then dressing up on game days as a backup for Taylor Heinicke. Howell wants to win his first game, and every game he plays in the NFL, and is excited for his first opportunity against the Cowboys this weekend.

He took the first-team representatives to training today for the first time, letting the world know that Rivera had a change of heart after the public were unhappy with the leak that Howell would get cleaning duty in a meaningless game. Today was the first time the rookie QB had the opportunity to throw the ball to starting WRs Terry McLaurin and Curtis Samuel. He said he had the opportunity to work with last year’s 1st round pick Jahan Dotson during rookie mini-camp, but it was great working with the other two starting receivers of Washington.
