Police have arrested a passenger following a woman’s complaint that he urinated on her during a flight.

Indian police arrested an unruly airline passenger following a complaint from a woman on board an Air India flight from New York who said he urinated on her.

Shankar Mishra was arrested by police in the southern city of Bangalore and taken to the Indian capital on Saturday, New Delhi police spokesman Suman Nalva said on Sunday.

Nalva declined to say what Mishra told investigators after his arrest.

The Times of India newspaper quoted Mishra as saying he was drunk and could not believe what he had done.

A New Delhi court has sent him to jail for 14 days as police investigate the complaint accusing Mishra of outraging a woman’s decency on the New York-New Delhi flight. If found guilty, he faces up to three years in prison.

Sugata Bhattacharjee, another passenger on the flight, told reporters that he saw Mishra consuming alcohol to excess and spoke incoherently, repeatedly asking her the same question about her family.

On Wednesday, Air India said in a statement that it had banned a male passenger for 30 days in accordance with regulations following the November 26 incident. The airline, which is part of the Tata group, said it reported the matter to management. . General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), India’s aviation safety watchdog, for new measures.

The DGCA, however, said on Thursday it had sought clarification from the airline over the incident, but prima facie it appeared that Air India had failed to comply with provisions for dealing with an unruly passenger on board.

On Saturday, Air India issued written notices and grounded a pilot and four cabin crew as the the incident sparked outrage on social media and among activists who said banning Mishra from flying for 30 days was not enough.

Air India said the crew did not summon the police upon landing in New Delhi as they believed the two had dealt with the matter on their own. According to Indian media, Air India acted after being pressured by the family of the elderly passenger to punish Mishra.

“Air India recognizes that it could have handled these issues better, both in the air and on the ground, and is committed to taking action,” the airline’s CEO and Managing Director, Campbell Wilson, said in a statement. a statement.

Meanwhile, Mishra’s job as a Mumbai-based executive has been terminated by her employer Wells Fargo & Company, an American multinational financial services company, the company said in a statement on Friday.

In 2017, India issued new standards prohibiting unruly passengers from flying for at least three months to more than two years, depending on the nature of the offence.

Air India reported a second incident last week, which occurred on Dec. 6 on a Paris-New Delhi flight in which a male passenger urinated on a vacant seat and another passenger’s blanket.

Air India added that the male passenger on the Paris flight was taken into custody on arrival in New Delhi but was later released by federal police after reaching an agreement with the victim and issuing a written apology.
