Gregg Berhalter addressed the public feud with the Reyna family on Thursday when he spoke at a Harvard Business Review event via LinkedIn.

Currently without a contract as USMNT head coach, the 49-year-old’s publicly acknowledged domestic violence incident dating back to 1991 involved his then-girlfriend and now wife Rosalind. Berhalter said in his initial statement that someone was trying to “let me downwho has since been revealed to be Danielle and Claudio Reyna — the parents of Gio, player of the USMNT and Borussia Dortmund.

The USSF has opened an investigation into allegations that Gio Reyna and Berhalter clashed at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar over the former’s behavior. Berhalter spoke on Thursday of his “sadness” over the episode and how “trust” can “disappear quickly” when asked about the Reyna family incident.

“The sadness,” Berhalter said. “Our whole family is saddened by these events. As we said in a statement, this is not something we were prepared to hide at the time and we will not hide it now. The statement speaks of We’ll just take it one day at a time and look forward to the day when we can move on.

“Trust is something that takes time to build but can fade quickly. But you have to be consistent with who you are and people can see that and trust that consistency. Trust is something I take very seriously. seriously.

“I have a strong family. For me, it’s about my wife. It’s about feeling for her. It was her story. I feel extremely bad that my profession had to bring this to the light of the audience.”

Berhalter is now out of contract because USMNT Patron and Anthony Hudson Will lead the team against Serbia and Colombia at the end of January among friends as part of a camp. USSF leader Earnie Stewart said Wednesday that Retention of Berhalter is not excluded and will always be considered based on the results of the investigation.

“It’s a fantastic group of players,” Berhalter added of the 2022 World Cup squad. “It would be an incredible challenge for this team. When we started in 2018, we wanted to change the way the world perceives American football. Of course, I would like to continue in this role.

You very rarely participate in an event like this and there is complete alignment with your team entities. It was a beautiful thing to watch, when I think how united they (the players) were. I think it was a great success. We didn’t hang around in the group stage.

“We played the four youngest teams in the World Cup. It was the first step for this group in terms of what they can do in the future. What I said to the guys is that is that each of you will be called upon to do this (World Cup success) We had great examples of guys who didn’t play a minute in the tournament and were some of the most impactful.”

Berhalter’s men finished behind England in Group B and even held the Three Lions scoreless and beat Iran before being knocked out 3-1 by quarter-finalists Netherlands in the round of 16. The details of the situation with Gio Reyna during the stay in Qatar only came to light in the aftermath of the US exit.

“If I had to do it over again, I wouldn’t have told this story,” Berhalter said when asked about his Comments at the HOW Institute Moral Leadership Summit for Society in New York just three days after elimination. “It brought too much attention to a shining example of team culture and teamwork. It would be something I would come back to and change for sure.”

Considering Berhalter and Claudio Reyna’s reputations from their playing days and their post-game accomplishments, this is unlikely to be the final chapter of this story.
