Gregg Berhalter said on Thursday he felt “sadness” over the alleged Reyna family blackmail plot which led him to reveal a domestic violence incident 31 years ago.
Berhalter said in a statement earlier this week that he was targeted by a third party who aimed to ‘bring him down’ as he admitted to kicking his now wife Rosalind at the age of 18 years old.
Danielle Reyna, the mother of American player Gio Reyna, admitted on Wednesday that she shared information about the incident with US officials on December 11 after Berhalter detailed it during a leadership conference how an anonymous player (later confirmed as Reyna) was nearly fired from Qatar because he failed to “live up to expectations”.
Former US captain Claudio Reyna also threatened to share details about Berhalter’s past during the tournament, according to ESPN.
And the coach spoke publicly for the first time since the story emerged on Thursday.
‘I think it’s sad. Our whole family is saddened by these events. It’s something we want to move forward,” Berhalter, who played youth and high school football with Claudio Reyna, told Harvard Business Review on Thursday.
