CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland Browns can’t allow Jadeveon Clowney to play the last game of the season on Sunday in Pittsburgh. Not after what the defensive end says Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com.
“You’re all trying to get somebody into the Hall of Fame when all that matters is winning,” Clowney said.
Clowney talks about fellow defensive end Myles Garrett. His point is that the coaching staff (or someone higher up) is giving Garrett pass-friendly matchups against weaker offensive linemen.

“I don’t think (Garrett) even notices it,” Clowney said. “I’m not trying to say it’s him. I try to get along with everyone I play with. Me and him have no problem. It’s not his fault. It’s just BS, and I don’t have time for that.
If Garrett hadn’t noticed before, he does now.
If the front office doesn’t know that Clowney is operating on its own agenda, they do now. In fact, I believe they know about Clowney – but those public comments must still bother them.
If the coaching staff doesn’t act firmly and bench him for the final game…
Come on, they have to do this…
Even though Browns publicly refuses to say much about Clowney’s remarks during press conferences before the Pittsburgh game, enough is enough.
Clowney should be done in Cleveland.
TOWARDS FREE AGENCY
Clowney spoke of having “made my money”. He said he played “for the love of the game”.
Anyone watching Clowney’s career in recent years knows that he is a pure football mercenary. He plays on one-year contracts. He’s been with four different teams over the past five years.
In 2020-21, he had a grand total of 3.0 sacks playing for Seattle and then Tennessee. He struggled with injuries.
The Browns bet Clowney would stay healthy when they signed him in 2021. He recorded 9.0 sacks last season – the second-highest total of his career.
Clowney was looking for a lucrative, likely long-term deal in 2022. He returned to Cleveland to a one-year, $10 million deal.
When things are going well for him personally, Clowney can be productive. When he struggles and fights injuries, he points the finger at others.
That’s why he moved from team to team despite his Pro Bowl talent.
“Let’s just say it,” Clowney said. “Let’s be honest. They don’t want me to outdo anyone.
So the coaches or someone – he refuses to name names – is holding him back. Plus, he seems to think he’s better than Garrett – or at least jealous of Cleveland’s star defensive end.
Plus, he’s headed to free agency and knows his market value is down.
But while he thinks it helps his situation, he’s further from the truth than even some of his critics would believe.
REALITY CHECK
Clowney only has two sacks this season. He was out for four games with an ankle injury and a concussion.
You can chat with Profootballfocus ratings up to a point: the analytics website has Garrett assessed as the no. 1 defensive end in the NFL. Clowney is No. 29.
Arguably, Garrett isn’t the best defensive end in the NFL this season. OKAY. But there’s no debating that Garrett is a far superior player to Clowney. Your eyes tell you.
A good coaching staff should move Garrett around the line of scrimmage, giving him every possible advantage to disrupt the game. They did it later. It should have happened earlier. Garrett has 15 bags. He is continually backed by blockers no matter where he lines up.
Cabot also reported that Clowney “chosen to play only third downs because of the change (of positions), ending with just 22 snaps (35%). Taven Bryan started in his place.
If so, Clowney shouldn’t have played last week at all.
“(The Browns) have their own guys, and I’m not one of them,” Clowney said. “So it’s time for me to get my release note.”
I am okay. Do it now.
