Mom slammed for viral TikTok over Christmas parenting failure

A woman said her five-year-old daughter opened the family’s gifts while they slept on Christmas morning in a tearful TikTok video that went viral.

“I was so looking forward to loving a magical Christmas morning. I spent three hours wrapping these presents,” Ciraulo said in the video. “We couldn’t watch her open a single present.”

Ciraulo told Insider that she posted the video on TikTok because she was frustrated that her daughter opened her presents without telling them, adding, “I thought other parents might understand.”

In the caption of the video, Cirualo asked, “What are we doing wrong here that our daughter thinks she’s okay?” and said she was “open to suggestions”.

Over 45,000 comments responded to the video and left mixed reviews. Some comforted Ciraulo and left advice on how to handle the situation, while others said it turned them off completely from having children.

“So it’s not parenting failure. You can’t control your kids’ actions no matter how hard you try. You’re probably a good mom with all this effort. Don’t worry,” one comment read with more than 24,700 likes. “Honestly mom sit her down then explain what she did why it hurt you and ask her why she did it,” said a comment with over 24,200 likes.

“Every day this app confirms my decision to never have children,” said a comment that received 13,000 likes.

After the video went viral, Ciraulo told Insider she received her fair share of negative feedback.

“I’ve had people privately call me out on Instagram as a narcissist to exploit my kids for views and comments,” she said.

Ciraulo recognizes that the inclusion of children in social media content is a contentious subjectbut told Insider, “I wasn’t shaming her in my video, and I would NEVER do that in public OR in private. It’s just not the way we parent.”

In one follow-up video posted on Dec. 26 that received more than 2.5 million views, Ciraulo said her daughter was aware that she was supposed to wake them up in the morning. She said they didn’t “punished” her by taking away all the toys, but decided to give some away.

Ciraulo also said her daughter was not a “bad kid” but “lacks impulse control” and said she believes “the root of the problem” is the “time she spends on her tablet.” and some of the things she learns there.” “

Ciraulo told Insider that they took the tablet away from their daughter on Christmas Day because she spent an average of five hours a day playing games.

“It was teaching her to be competitive and materialistic in an unhealthy way,” she said. “She was also watching a lot of YouTube videos of other kids playing these games, and it reinforced these concepts.”

Ciraulo has over 66,000 on it TikTok account where she regularly posts videos about motherhood, including daily life videos and parenting vlogs.
