Brock Purdy proves himself to 49ers despite not being '100%' healthy

San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Brock Purdy is still struggling with oblique and rib injuries he sustained against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Seattle Seahawks. Ahead of Saturday’s game against the Washington Commanders, NFL insider Jay Glazer shared more information about the injury.

What people don’t know is that last game they played a few Thursdays ago in Seattle, it actually had a strained oblique,” Glazer said on FOX’s pregame show, “and had tears in the fiber muscle, as well as a rib injury, like Bien. An hour and a half before the game, he couldn’t throw more than 10 yards.

He took a painkiller injection and the team said, “Oh my God.” What they thought of him went through the roof that day.

This week, head coach Kyle Shanahan says NBC Sports Bay Area that he wasn’t sure if Purdy could play against the Seahawks. And he wasn’t just talking about the week leading up to that Thursday night game. Shanahan wasn’t sure his rookie quarterback would pull off the game while watching him during pregame warmups.

Purdy intended to play, however.

Shanahan was hopeful he could play some, but wasn’t optimistic the quarterback would go all game. However, Purdy came through the game, helping the 49ers clinch the NFC West crown and a playoff berth.

Nine days later, against the Washington Commanders, the injury still affects Purdy. That didn’t stop his 49ers from winning their eighth straight game, however.

“He’s definitely not 100 per cent,” Shanahan told reporters after the 37-20 win. “So I think it affects him a bit.”

Still, the quarterback feels much better than what he faced before this Seahawks game. He finished Saturday’s game against the Commanders 15 of 22 for 234 yards, two touchdowns, one interception and a passer rating of 114.6.

“Honestly, I felt it a little more against Seattle,” Purdy admitted. “So there were moves, like some weird moves, where I felt my rib and so on. But for this game, I honestly felt good going into the game. I did well with the treatment and all that week leading up to so I felt better running, especially going to my left and stuff.

“Yeah, I think if the coach had called that stuff in Seattle too, I would have made it happen, anyway. It’s part of the game.”

With four overtime games and three starts under his belt, is Purdy more comfortable in his role as the 49ers’ starting quarterback?

Shanahan said: “We always knew he was in command from the start but once you get through those weeks it’s not just the games but also just getting used to the way he is. a Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, the whole routine of the week”, meetings, everything. He’s starting to talk to the guys, they’re just getting used to the guy more, and it’s been fun. “

The only change for Purdy is that he is getting more reps in practices and playing time in games. The rookie quarterback always spent his week preparing like he was the starter.

“I don’t really think, Am I more and more comfortable? or something like that,” Purdy shared. “I still have the same fire and drive as before, [when] I was not playing. I want to enter, and I want to prove [myself] to my teammates and earn their respect with every shot, every drive, that kind of mentality.

“I just have to remember not to lose that passion and that fire and it’s never easy. Every game, no matter who we play against, it’s never easy.”

tight end George Kittlewho had two touchdown passes from Purdy, thinks the rookie’s confidence makes everyone around him feel more confident.

“You can just say he took tens of thousands of reps at quarterback,” Kittle said. “I think it’s very helpful for him at the moment, and that’s why he was able to come in so late in the season and play at a high level.”

Perhaps the best quote on Purdy came from a 49ers wide receiver.

“With Purdy, since day one, he’s got big cojones, man,” Ray-Ray McCloud said.

Despite being a rookie, McCloud thinks Purdy gives off “alpha male” vibes in the locker room.

“And when he’s there, he takes leadership in the caucus,” McCloud explained. And that was since pre-season, when he first came here, the OTAs, and that doesn’t surprise us on the pitch.

The 49ers were a happy bunch after beating the Washington Commanders 37-20 at Levi’s Stadium on Saturday, and that led to a lot of good material coming out of the locker room after the game. Players such as George Kittle and Nick Bosa wore Christmas-themed outfits as they spoke to reporters after the game, while the team in general was delighted to head into Christmas with a win. As a special treat, players will be able to rest this Christmas before resuming a normal schedule as they prepare for the Las Vegas Raiders next Sunday. “Yeah, we don’t give a damn

49ers tight end George Kittle left a football version of a lump of coal in one of his teammate’s socks on Saturday, and he doesn’t seem the least bit sorry he did. Kittle caught two touchdown passes in the 49ers’ 37-20 win over the Washington Commanders on Saturday, but the first wasn’t supposed to go to him at all. He was aimed at wide receiver Ray-Ray McCloud, but Kittle swooped in and took him, giving him a 34-yard touchdown that put the 49ers up 14-7 over the Commanders early in the third quarter. Video from the play shows Kittle and McCloud both running to where Purdy threw the ball, but Kittle beat McCloud to the play, while McCloud wondered where Kittle was from and what he was.

As Sunday night rolls on and the rest of the NFL finds itself plagued by either critical playoff surges or tanking issues, the 49ers are firmly seated as the official champions of the NFC West. Their games for the rest of the year – in Las Vegas and at home against the Commanders and Cardinals – are certainly winnable, but San Francisco’s wave of success has shifted the team’s priorities. As always after a playoff win, the Niners have a chance to stay healthy and give their backups more rep in case they’re needed for emergencies or specialized playoff roles. But there is one replacement in particular who has risen to the point where he has become a real X-factor in the 49ers’ playoff push – QB Brock Purdy. The NFL world will be watching the 49ers for the next few years

The San Francisco 49ers have released the active roster for their Week 15 road game against the Seattle Seahawks. These players will not be suitable for Thursday’s game. Inactive: QB Jimmy Garoppolo (foot) DL Kevin Givens (knee) DB Tarvarius Moore (knee) LB Curtis Robinson WR Deebo Samuel (ankle, knee) CB Samuel Womack (concussion) OL Nick Zakelj The 49ers previously ruled out Garoppolo, Givens, Moore, Samuel and Womack due to injuries.
