Welcome to the 465th Weekly Android Apps and the last edition in 2022. Happy New Year, and here are the headlines from last week:
- We asked our readers how Google did this year. You all told us you think Google is doing pretty well this year, both in terms of hardware and software. When it comes to stats, 48% of you said Google had a good year, while only about 5% thought the year was a complete failure. You can click on the link to see more detailed statistics.
- We also asked our readers when they last downloaded an app on Android. More than 40% of our readers have downloaded an app in the past month, and only about 15% have never downloaded an app at all. We found this interesting since the common narrative is that sideloading is rare. Apparently we have a few rare readers.
- Our own Adam Birney tried to use Google Translate while traveling with mixed results. For example, some of the traveler-friendly features don’t work offline. Adam has described his experience with the various features that work or don’t work, and you can read about it at the link above.
- Google is concerned about search. The number of artificial intelligence tools and their growing popularity puts the company on the alert. Apparently, the situation is a code red at Google. The concern is that the AI’s answers give such precise answers that people won’t click on the ad links anymore, which would cost Google a lot of money. You can click on any of the links to view our selections. Overall, there are 50 apps and games to browse, along with ten other controversial apps and games. It’s been quite an exciting year with some interesting launches.
Living Alliance HD Remastered

Alliance Alive HD Remastered is a remaster of the Nintendo 3DS game of the same name. It is also available on Steam, Nintendo Switch and iOS. The game is an RPG that takes place in a fantasy world. Players eventually end up with nine characters, with each story intertwining with the other. The combat is turn-based and fairly representative of JRPGs of its day. The game includes the full story of the original, plus updated graphics, new features, and of course, mobile controls. It’s a bit pricey at $11.99, but there are no ads or in-app purchases to tarnish the experience afterwards.
Single launcher
Price: To free
Mere Launcher is a minimalist launcher with larger icons. The home screen shows your favorite apps, with a simple shortcut to the app drawer where you can find everything. The app includes dark and light themes, a background tint feature for improved contrast, and you can even orient the launcher landscape if needed. There aren’t a ton of extra features, but that’s to be expected for a minimalist app. It’s not half bad and worked well in our testing.
frozen city
Price: free to play
Frozen City is a city building simulator. It takes place in a world of snow and ice, and that plays into the survival aspects of the game. You slowly build your town, assign newly arrived survivors to complete tasks, explore the wilderness, and survive the cold. It’s a fairly simple game without a lot of twists and turns to annoy the player. There are microtransactions, but they’re not terrible. Aside from a few early game bugs, everything works pretty well.
My link manager
Price: To free
My Link Manager is an application for organizing and managing your web browser’s bookmarks. This is a particularly good app if you’re using a web browser that doesn’t support bookmarks or doesn’t allow you to sync them to a new device. It’s a pretty simple app overall. You put your links there, organize them and retrieve them when needed. There is an import and export function, so you can save them. It also does not require internet access, making it a completely offline application. There really isn’t much wrong with this one, and it performed well in our testing.
Always Legion
Price: free to play
Ever Legion is an idle RPG. The game launches the player on an adventure to save his family from being turned into undead monsters. You collect heroes, let them fight to level up and progress through the game. As the genre suggests, the game plays in the background so you can grind while you sleep. The graphics are decent. We liked the world design more than the character design, but it’s a very Diablo-like experience, with dark color palettes. It competes with games like AFK Arena, and as long as the developer gets it right, it might actually succeed.
